Welcome to Penryn & Mylor

Your Beat Manager

Your Beat Managers

The Penryn & Mylor website covers a vast area which incorportates the town of Penryn together with Tremough Campus and the Parishes of Mylor, Flushing, Perranwell and Gwennap.

This page provides details of the extensive work that is down in your community by both of your local Policing Teams, of Penryn and the what we call the Tremough & Rural Teams.

PENRYN TOWN TEAM

Hi I am PC John Dukes and I am the Neighbourhood Beat Manager for Penryn. I originate from Sheffield and came to Penryn in 1981. Prior to joining the force in 1995 I served in the Royal Navy and was stationed at RNAS Culdrose before seeing active service in the Falklands conflict. My first 2 years Police service were spent in Ilfracombe, North Devon before being transferred to Penryn (the old station in Commercial Road). In 1988 I became one of the first Community Officers in Cornwall and became responsible for policing the main street through Falmouth. After 2 years I became a response officer covering both Falmouth and Penryn before in 1997 being accepted in to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) where I remained for the next 10 years. Whilst on the "department" I was involved in a number of high profile cases including the dreadful double murder at Perch garage in Wadebridge. I also spent 18 months employed on the Paedophile unit investigating cases of child abuse.

I am a great believer in engaging with the local youth in Penryn have been coaching a youth team at Penryn Rugby Club for the past 7 years. In addition to this I also coach Penryn College year 8 team and have this year commenced a Police Community Sports Club for 13 and 14 year boys and girls. I engage with the Town Council and report to their meetings on a monthly basis regarding community events & information. There are a number of other community based groups which we are also able to communicate with such as the Saracen Way and Shute Meadow Resident Associations, Carrick Housing, The Combined Universities of Cornwall, Penryn Youth Space and Penryn Junior and Infant Schools.

PCSO Lewis Vague is the Police Community Support Officer for both Penryn and Tremough Campus. He has have been a Police Community Support Officer for just over two years.

His role as a PCSO is to be highly visible and accessible to the public, he engages with the public by attending regular Council Meetings, holding Police Surgeries and conducting regular foot patrol around Penryn and Tremough.

Lewis and I hold regular PACT (Partners and Communities Together) meetings in Penryn Town hall, where anyone and everyone is able to voice their concerns about our town. For dates and times please see Local Events. This is a great way of bringing genuine community concerns to the notice of not only the Police but also agencies such as Highways, Housing and Penryn Town Council. It is through these meetings that our attention has been brought to the parking and speeding problems that we have. As a result of this we have engaged with the new Carrick Enforcement Officers who are actively targeting the parking issue.

With regard to the speeding issues we have targeted the affected areas and school children, supervised by ourselves have carried out road speed checks to educate road users and improve road safety. There is also Community Speed Watch for any residents who wish to highlight a problem area and to assist us with roadside speed check device.

Finally is you have any non-urgent issues that you wish to discuss then please feel free to call the Penryn Office on 01326 213421 or alternatively click on the "Contact Your Local Team" link and send us an email.

TREMOUGH & RURAL

Hello, I am PC Charlie Staines and I would like to welcome you to our website and the home of the Fal Boat Watch. I am the Neighbourhood Beat Manager for the rural areas of Falmouth and Penryn. My beat covers Mylor, Flushing, Perranwell, Gwennap and all the hamlets in between. I am also the Police Constable for the Combined Universities of Cornwall at Tremough Campus, Penryn.

The areas that I cover are vast and I conduct both mobile and foot patrols on a regular basis in all the villages. We are dedicated to visiting all of our Village schools on our patrols and we can either be seen, before school starts or at home times.

I am joined in your area by PCSO Fiona Gamble, she is well known from her regular patrols and has made some valuable community contacts. Fiona comments -

"Hi I am PCSO Fiona Gamble I joined Devon and Cornwall Police in 2007 as a Station Enquiry Officer based at St Ives Police Station. I gained a lot of experience from this role and worked very closely with the St Ives Neighbourhood Team. In January 2010 I was successful in being appointed in my current role as a PCSO and after a few months of training started working with PC Charlie Staines."

"I live in a small village near Penzance and understand what it is like to be part of a small community. As a PCSO I enjoy engaging with all members of the community which includes schools and nurseries and also vulnerable older adults in the community. I am very approachable and will listen and act on any concerns the community may have."

Are beat also boasts some of the finest sailing waters in the UK and we have for a number of years worked closely with the majority of the sailing clubs/associations, boat yards, marina's and other interested parties involved in and on the water. To this end we looked at reducing marine crime with our community and was succesful in obtaining key community funding for a project, which we called Boat Watch.

Boat Watch was launched in July 2009, i
t was the pilot scheme for Cornwall and was seen as an excellent community partnership project based on the principals of neighbourhood watch, with the common goal to reduce marine crime and the fear of marine crime.

In the first year the Boat Watch reduced Marine Crime by nearly 40%.

This has now led to the Force wide roll out of our community project, a fantastic acheivement for us locally to receive such recognition. You can discover more about Boat Watch and advice on reducing marine crime by clicking on the about my neighbourhood tab at the bottom of this page.

Tremough Campus

My role as a University Police Constable is a growing one and I work closely with the University and the Student Union FXU, in promoting safety amongst the students and staff.

The University have their own PCSO, with this role being performed by PCSO Lewis Vague. Lewis has worked to create the Police Office, the integration of Police technology into the state of the art security system, the internal communication network at the campus.

We are there to provide a relevant Police service to the students and this is further supported by our dedicated marketing campaigns, which were in fact created by students!

A recent addition to our work at the University is our highly successful Face Book site

The site has a direct link with the FXU student website, once accepted as a 'friend' the students can take advantage of the information provided by Devon and Cornwall Police and also use it as an easy way to contact us with any issues the have.

Active Priorities

Our top priorities for your neighbourhood are as follows:

PARKING ON THE PAVEMENTS IN PENRYN

You Said: 9 Aug 2010

WITH PARKING AT A PREMINUM IN PENRYN THERE HAS BEEN A NOTABLE INCREASE IN THE AMOUNT OF VEHICLES PARKING ON THE TOWNS PAVEMENTS. THIS CAUSES PADESTRIANS, WHEELCHAIR USERS AND PEOPLE WITH PUSHCHAIRS ONTO THE ROAD WHERE THEY ARE AT RISK OF COLLISION. PEOPLE WITH POOR EYESIGHT ALSO FACE PROBLEMS WITH THIS TYPE OF OBSTRUCTION. PAVEMENTS ARE NOT DESIGNED TO CARRY VEHICLES AND PARKING ON THEM CAUSES DAMAGE WHICH ADDS TO MAINTENANCE COSTS.

So far we have:

INITIAL PRIORITIES ARE TO EDUCATE THE OFFENDING DRIVERS THROUGH THE MEDIA, LOCAL STREET BRIEFINGS AND SUITABLY WORDED MOBILE SIGNS IN AFFECTED AREAS.

FIXED PENALTY NOTICES WILL THEN BE ISSUED AT A COST OF £30 TO THE OFFENDING MOTORISTS.

CYCLISTS TRAVELLING THE WRONG WAY ALONG ONE WAY STREETS IN PENRYN

You Said: 9 Aug 2010

THERE HAS BEEN AN INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF CYCLISTS CYCLING THE WRONG WAY IN THE ONE WAY STREETS OF PENRYN. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS PRACTICE PUTTING BOTH THE CYCLISTS AT RISK AN OTHER ROAD USERS.

So far we have:

INITIAL EDUCATION WILL BE CONDUCTED THROUGH THE MEDIA, STREET BRIEFINGS AND ONE ON ONE BRIEFINGS WITH OFFENDING CYCLISTS.

FIXED PENALTY TICKETS WILL BE ISSUED FOR PERSISTENT OFFENDERS.

OFF ROAD MOTOR CYCLES AND 4X4'S AT WHEAL MAID

You Said: 9 Aug 2010

UNLAWFUL USE OF MOTOR CYCLES AND 4X4'S IN THE PRIVATE LAND LOCATED AT WHEAL MAID, CROFTHANDY. THIS IS A CONSTANT NUISANCE TO LOCAL RESIDENTS AND A DANGEROUS PASTIME FOR THE RIDERS AS THE GROUND IS EXTREMELY UNSTABLE. THE LAND IS DESIGNATED AS CONTAMINATED AND COULD BE HARMFUL TO USERS.

So far we have:

OFFENDING RIDERS ARE TO BE ISSUED WITH SECTION 59 NOTICES AND CONTINUED USE OF THE AREA BY THE SAME PERSONS WILL RESULT IN THE MOTOR CYCLES AND 4X4'S BEING SEIZED.
