Policing in Devon
Policing in Devon presents many challenges with its diverse geographic locations, from sparsely populated rural areas through busy coastal and market towns, to more densely populated urban areas such as Exeter and Torbay.
A Diverse Mix of Communities
In addition to its geographic challenges, Devon houses a diverse mix of local communities and a seasonal influx of visitors that sees population increase from 1 million to 8 million in the summer months.
Neighbourhood Policing Teams
"Devon is committed to delivering a policing service that reflects the different needs and concerns of local communities".
To achieve this, Neighbourhood Policing Teams have been established in local communities, supported by additional 24-hour patrolling officers and specialist officers such as detectives, dog-handlers and traffic-officers.
Interesting Statistics
The Devon Basic Command Unit (the county of Devon excluding Plymouth) is made up of:
- 1270 police officers
- 500 police staff (including 173 PCSOs - Police Community Support Officers)
- Over 300 Special Constables.
"More people work in dedicated Neighbourhood Policing Teams than ever before, each providing a consistent visible, accessible and known presence in your neighbourhood".
Working Together
Devon's' dedicated Neighbourhood Policing Teams seek to involve the public in identifying its main neighbourhood and policing concerns.
This provides a means of public influence of how issues are prioritised and tackled.
"We can’t do this alone; all members of the public including residents, young people and local businesses have an active part to play in identifying these concerns, in being part of joint problem-solving responses and in holding local policing teams to account".
Equally, partner agencies such as the Local Authorities and Health have a crucial role working with us to improve the quality of life in local communities.
Working Together
Devon remains one of the safest places to live.
"I am confident that this joint approach will assist in building neighbourhoods where crime is low, that are safe and that feel safe".
Getting to Know Us...
"If you haven’t already done so, I encourage you to seek out your own Neighbourhood Policing Team and discuss your community policing concerns and needs with them, so that together we can continue to build a safer Devon".
