Bideford West

Welcome to Bideford West

Your Beat Manager

Derek Broadribb

I have been a police officer since 2001, mainly on the response section covering Barnstaple. I have now joined the Bideford Neighbourhood Beat Team and I am very happy to be responsible for the Bideford West area.

I have lived in Bideford all my life and went to Bideford College. I look forward to working back in my hometown and hope to see as many residents and visitors as possible when patrolling Bideford West.

PCSO Hayley Watts

I have been a PCSO for 2 years having previously owned my own business in Torrington. I moved to the area in 2001 from Oxfordshire to be nearer my family. I have always worked in industries where customer service is important.

Since being a PCSO I have drawn on this experience. As Bideford is a tourist town I meet a wide variety of people on my patrols especially during the summer months and when the many organised festivals are taking place. Please feel free to stop and chat when you see me on my patrols.

PCSO Paul Uden

I have recently joined the Bideford Neighbourhood Beat team having completed my training in November 08. I moved to the area in 2006 when I applied for the PCSO role and waited until November to start my posting. In my short time here I have enjoyed getting to know the local people as well as the local area. My main area of responsibility is the residential area of Bideford West encompassing the schools and Atlantic Village so my daily routine is always varied. I hope over the coming years to make a real difference to the area.

PCSO Rebecca Tanner

I have recently joined the Bideford Neighbourhood Beat Team having completed my training in July 2010. I have come from a management background and now am looking forward to working within the community as part of the team. I'll be out in the town most of the time and look forward to meeting as many of you as possible.

Active Priorities

Our top priorities for your neighbourhood are as follows:

Grafitti in Bideford Town

You Said: 26 Aug 2010

Concerns have been raised due to the amount of grafitti

appearing in Bideford Town. There are several different styles and tags occurring suggesting that there are a number of grafitti artists.

So far we have:

We are working alongside Torridge District Council to remove the grafitti. Grafitti Buster has been at Victoria Park on 25/08/10 to remove the grafitti which was found in the fort. Photographs are also being taken in order to try and establish the artist.

Speeding on Abbotsham Road

You Said: 25 Aug 2010

Concerns have been raised regarding the speed of vehicles using the Abbotsham Road. Abbotsham Road has a 30mph speed limit with a 20mph zone outside of Bideford College. There are currently gas works taking place directly outside of the College which has restricted the road to one lane with access only for residents.

So far we have:

Speed Survey work is consitantly carried out in all areas of Torridge. Two recent surveys have been carried out on Abbotsham Road which have returned two average speeds of 27.9mph and 27.7 mph. A total of 400 vehicles were captured and speed recorded during a morning period and late afternoon. Vehicles that exceeded the limit were sent warning letters advising them about their driving, future conduct and concequences. Further survey work is planned for the area to monitor the situation and Traffic Officers have been tasked to also carry out speed checks on the Abbotsham Road. Results will be published on this web page.

On the 26/08/10 between 0920hrs and 1020hrs a total of 54 vehicles were speed checked along the Abbotsham Road with an average speed of 32.5mph which is within Devon and Cornwall Constabularies tolerance guidlines. Further speed checks will be carried out shortley.

Resolved Priorities

Recently resolved priorities for your neighbourhood are as follows:

Anti Social Behaviour of children/youths Clovelly Road, Bowden Green, Pynes Lane

You Said: 22 Jul 2010

anti social behaviour of children/youths Clovelly Road, Bowden Green, Pynes Lane
recently there has been an increase in reports of gatherings of youths in the area causing a disturbance for local residents. several reports have been received from residents and local businesses.

We Did: 25 Aug 2010

You Said, We Did
Increased patrols have been started and all Bideford officers have been asked to identify any youths seen involved in any anti social behaviour.  A police computer log was created so all officers that had dealings with anyone causing anti social behaviour could leave their names so a local officer could follow up the incident with letters and visits to the home address if appropriate. Since the creation of this log very few incidents have occured and we hope that this trend will continue as officers patrol these targeted areas. Further patrols in the area have seen a reduction in issues in the area. There have been no reports of problems around the petrol station and no reports of nuisance youths in the Old Town Park.

We are working along side partner agencies including Local Housing Authorities to help put the message across that any ASB behaviour will not be tolerated and appropriate actions will be taken

There have been no reports of ASB in these areas over the last few weeks. Regular patrols will continue and we encourage all members of the public to call the police if they have any worries or concerns.

Large groups of youths being anti-social and drinking in the Town Centre

You Said: 22 Jul 2010

Large groups of youths being anti-social and drinking in the Town Centre

Reports of youths in the Town Centre area in the evening being intimidating to the public and drinking underage.

We Did:

You Said, We Did
Increased patrols in the town centre area and regular engagement with local licensed premises concerning the sale of alcohol to underage youths. The park area continues to be patrolled and monitored by CCTV. PCSOs and NBMs have changed shifts to increase visable patrols during peak periods. A new group of Special Constabulary Officers have joined the station and have all been very keen to support their collegues in the town centre, which has had a very positve effect in tackling ASB.

A section 30 dispersal notice has been issued today 04/08/10 to a male who was drinking around the Lundy Office and Bideford Quay. The male has been sent away from the town centre and cannot return until Thursday.

Due to increased patrols in the town centre over the past few months the amount of underage drinking has decreased considerably , if required alchohol has been removed from youths, details taken and if deemed necessary a section 30 has been put in place

Bideford Town Centre is situated around the quay area of Bideford. The port at Bideford although small by comparsion to other docks is still a working dock with large ships often seen along the waters edge. It is also where The Oldenburg ship departs for trips to Lundy Island throughout the Spring and Summer. Bideford town also has many events on an annual basis including the Reggatta and Carnival at the begining of September and the New Years Eve celebrations, which attract up to 10,000 revellers annually and is arguably the largest New Years celebrations in the South West.

The predominately residential area of Bideford West is home to all the main secondary schools for the area, both state and independant. Bideford College is the main state school comprising approximately 1800 pupils and is currently going through a £58million redevelopment. The independant schools in the beat area Grenville College & Edgehill College have recently merged to become Kingsley College.

The area also has a small hospital which includes a minor injuries unit and Accident and Emergency Department.

In Atlantic Village there is also an out of town shopping Mall containing numerous retail outlets including ASDA.
