Welcome to Wellswood

Your Beat Manager

Trevor Thomas

I am PC Trevor THOMAS and I have been the Neighbourhood beat officer for Wellswood for over 4 years now, prior to that I worked in the Torbay Interview Unit and as a response-front line-police officer. My current role is varied and sometimes challenging, but overall very rewarding. I have established a good framework of contacts within the area and also have an excellent colleague in PCSO Victoria GRAHAM to help carry on and enhance the neighbourhood improvements. The quarterly partnership meetings have seen ideas come to fruition and I am delighted with the progress made.

Active Priorities

Our top priorities for your neighbourhood are as follows:

Anti-social Driving

You Said: 13 Jul 2010

Anti Social driving along Meadfoot Sea Road, Ilsham Valley and up to Ilsham Road is causing alarm to residents and other members of the public.

So far we have:

The reports of speeding vehicles have decreased over the last few months but would stress that reports of this nature need to be reported.  The result of the consultation undertaken with the Highways department at Torbay Council relating to the speeding vehicles in Ilsham valley and Meadfoot Sea Road was frustrating as they can see no need to amend the road layout. Of the hundreds of vehicle which drove in these areas, only a handful were driving at speed. The ward Partnership are to push for additional signage to remind drivers that it is a 30 mph area and to drive accordingly. Further planned traffic operations are due to take place this summer in the bay, to be undertaken by both Traffic officers and the local Neighbourhood Team to address this problem. Please call 08452 777444 should you see any vehicle driving at speed and causing annoyance so that P C Thomas and PCSO Graham can visit the registered keeper and take positive action.

Litter on Illsham Green

Residents of Ilsham Valley

So far we have:

Local residents to the area would have seen that additional bins have now been provided to a address this problem.   This is a beautiful area open to one and all and there is nothing more upsetting than seeing the green strewn with rubbish and litter at the end of a sunny day.  Please respect and enjoy this area accordingly.

    About Your Neighbourhood

This ward is given over to predominantly private residential housing varying from large contemporary dwellings, to large Victorian/Edwardian houses, converted into multi-occupancy tenanted dwellings, down to one bedroom apartments. The ward incorporates Wellswood and Torwood, the latter, in the region of Torwood Street, is predominantly given over to shops and restaurants and has a thriving night-time economy with Pubs and Night Clubs. The Wellswood “village” in Ilsham Road has good quality restaurants and independent shops and has Ilsham Primary School at its heart. Wellswood has a higher than average amount of people of a retirement age and has well attended churches at St Matthias and Riviera Life, in Babbacombe Road. Torwood Street is home to both Bohemia and the Venue Nightclubs, both able to accommodate in excess of 1000 people. Subsequently like any other town with night clubs and 'take aways', there are inherent Anti-social problems in this area late at night and particularly at weekends but robust policing and stern efforts by local licencees has seen a decline in drink related crimes in the last few years. There are large areas of coastal paths, mainly managed by the Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust and two other schools, namely Warberry Primary and Stoodley Knowle Convent School.
