This page will include some of the past events and activities  that Simon Hill has been involved in as the Mid Cornwall Diversity Officer:

 

The third annual LD event with representatives from the Police, Fire and Ambulance this year joined by Cliff Rescue.  Other organisations such as 'Safe Places' and Cronwall People First were central to the organisation of the event where over 250 people had the opportunity to come together.  A LD PACT survey was conducted by the LD Champions

 

The multi faith group running the Dor Kemmyn Project

 

Travellerspace organised an event at St Day to celebrate Gypsy Travller Monthe 2010 with was attended by many travellers and representatives from the Police, Council and other support organisations

 

Meeting with Andrew Baker from Esteem a support organisation for men suffering domestic abuse

 

Regular visit to the Islamic Community Centre during Friday Prayers to meet with members of the Muslim Comminity

 

Regular meeting including Police and Cornwall Council, chaired by Supt Julie Whitmarsh

 

Meeting with the organiser of the Restect Festival to discuss BME PACT, Funding opportunities and progress with the organisation of the event.

 

As a diversity officer we attend these meetings to assist with the six strand meetings in the morning, in the afternoon the chairs and vice charis of the strand meetings go on to a strategic meeting with members of the Chief Officer Group

 

Another in a series of Public meetings being held to provide updates on the progress of work in respect of Cornwall Racial Equality Council.  BME PACT Survey cards were also available ta the meeting

 

Attended YAY! LGBTQ Youth Group Meeting in Truro as Trustee

 

As part of a three year delivery of Diversity training to Ocean Housing staff co-ordinated by Equality South West, Simon delivered a session on Hate Crime on behalf of Cornwall Racial Equality Council (CREC) & Katie Wise delivered a presentation on Gypsy Travellers.

 

Meeting to discuss the proceedures with staff from Pentreath

 

 

Presentations focused on the development of the project e.g. how lesson planning has developed over the course of the project with representatives of the three organisations; Victim Support, Young People Cornwall and Cornwall Women’s Refuge Trust, making contributions. There was an input from some young people involved in the schools’ work and also with members of Hear our Voice who worked on the production of a DVD. Sue Penna Associates provided an overview of the independent evaluation.

 

There was a presentation by Parlimentary Outreach as well as an update on the current priorities

 

Held in St Austell.  Al reed the East Cornwall Diversity Officer usually meets with CPF but as thier meeting was in St Austell then I joined them and Magi Omlo-Code gave a presentation on the work she has been doing in respect of the Safe Places Scheme

 

 

Held in Bodmin

Over 90 people met for a days conference discussing the place of faith in the jusitce system particularly focussing on the probation service and the other organsiations working with offenders

 

Meeting held at St Austell

Funding bids for Cornwall Blind Shooting Association to attend a national shooting event and Travellerspace to produce a myth busting booklet about gypsy travellers.

 

 

Parlimentary Outreach event at Kngsley Village.

This event was jointly hosted by the south west Parlimentary Outreach team and voluntary organisations from Cornwall including East Cornwall Council for Voluntary Service ECCVS.

 

A number of faiths who are part of the Dor Kemmyn project came together for a joint celebration in Truro

 

Part of our internal engagement, I spent the day visiting all of the police stattions in mid Cornwall to promote the staff census.

 

Promoted a moment of contemplation to remember the victims of the Holocaust.

 

Simon made one of his regular visits to the Asian Community Centre at Carnon Downs spending time speaking with the visitors to the centre

 

The Diverse Communities Teams and other members of the team from headquaters including the training team meet quaterly for a development day. Amongust other things Chief Inspector Brendan Brookshaw gave the team an update on the Performance and Tasking meeting that he had been to.

 

Simon attended the meeting to discuss Hate Crime and opportunities to build closer links with the college around diversity

 

An open meeting in Redruth was attended by about 30 people.  Dean Harvey (Chair) gave an update on the current situation and progress, there was a quastion and answer session and a report on the sucessful Respect Festival in Truro this summer.

 

Held at Newquay, funding bids from Celtic Storm and Safe Places were approved for £500 each.

Islamic Awareness Event:

It incorporated a visit to a local Mosque and aims to provide participants with: · A better understanding of basic beliefs & practices, · Information regarding the background to Muslims, · Public Sector Development issues for Muslim Communities, · Group work that will enable delegates to discuss case studies, · Implementation of the Race Relations (Amendment) Act and the religion and Belief regulations
